Public Gaol

+++ The Public Gaol is a building the people in Williamsburg used as a prison. When it was built in the year 1790, it already consisted of two cells, and later, it got more. People on the Gaol (which is actually pronounced “jail “) were mostly people waiting to be hanged or whipped, depending on their crime. Yet there were also military prisoners, robbers, assasins, spies, and sometimes even pirates! Some of the prisoners the people in Williamsburg were the proudest to have were 15 pirates of the crew of Blackbeard. On 1711 they also added debtor cells, cells for slaves who missed behaved or tried to escape. On 1910 the building was modified.
